  BOTR, I kinda get what you mean. Personally, I wish the book was more obscure. Then it would be even cooler. :P

  I think his lack of care about money and things is supposed to tell you something about his character.

  Pistoff: LOL! I guess Holden's inclination to not exactly worship those in authority and his lack of faith would sure be "bad association" for a dub. Not to mention the cussing. What was it, about 6 "f*cks" in the last 1/3rd of the book? Then there's Sunny...

  Darn it blondie, you should read it! Even if you hate it, it's worth a read just because it is, you know Catcher in the Rye. :)

  And actually I'm reading Hemingway right now.

  Never noticed your comment, d. It's great book to help a person question a lot of things. I don't understand why some people think it only has either shocking or boring content to offer. It has depth that surpasses most Young Adult books I've read. It does not patronize you.

  I suppose it is because it is not plot-oriented, and many people do not have the patience for such a story. But the fact is, most people's lives, especially teenager's lives, are often less plot-oriented than thought-oriented. And it is rarely fully recognized that teenagers can be so stressed, introspective, and intelligent. If there's one thing some people hate, it's a smart teen. :D

  Then again, of course, some people just don't connect with certain books.

  Oh well. This thread is pretty much dead, but I thought I'd might as well end it myself.

  on page 171 of the "learn from the great teacher" book published in 2003 it shows a picture of a very cute little girl holding a ragged ann doll.

  she is sitting on a chair in her bedroom with her hand out toward a man that is coming toward her.. the paragraphs say "so just as jesus needed protection, you also need to be protected from grown-ups-and even from other children-who may try to have sex with you.

  usually, these people will pretend to be your friends.

  my take on the drama this year is yet another slam against having children......... the "ideal" is still to pioneer........they're the ones put on a pedestal, both the younger and older couples.. the young mother, is forced to care for a cranky, crying child........

  life is too short and lady lee are so right...

  IMO they should recomend, warmly but urgently, that the kid should TRY TO resist if they can BUT also state somehow that if in the future this resistence doesn't work or they can't or don't resist, they didn't are not to blame and should emphasize that a lot. Plus the whole article is just vague and badly written, guilt inducing, confusing, and offensive. It should be more direct, without using the jesus part or making the kid feel like an accomplice somehow.

  Lady Lee, would that be a good idea? Or am I wrong?

  As if god always knows what's best in the OT...

  I'm happy about this. No one has the right to permanently alter a child/baby's body. And all those health benifits that are "proven", I'm pretty sure aren't REALLY proven for sure...

  The JWs in my cong seem to think that the lgbt community gets everything handed to them and tend to be bullies, and if every a "a gay" was murdered, it would always get more attention than a poor straight person.

  Yeahno. Never even heard about this case till now.

  This is rather random, but, I've found that volunteering- focusing on others and somewhat less on myself for a certain period of time (not totally disregarding my own feelings, not diminishing them, and never avoiding introspection, of course), can help a lot. (I wish I could volunteer this summer.) I don't know if that's your "thing", but sometimes making a commitment to help others can really lift one's own spirit. And if you are not able to volunteer a lot, there's short-term, non-committal volunteering that is available as well. I've even heard of volunteering partly through the internet.
